EVENT OVERVIEW

A breakthrough free-surfing project, the FREEWAVE CHALLENGE strips today's high performance wave riding down to its most interesting elements, combining the input of both the public and the surfers themselves to decide the sport's true "Rides of the Year."
This second-ever FREEWAVE CHALLENGE event will take place across the entire Mainland American surfing scene from June 20 through September 22, 2008. Entries will be accepted in five categories: the Monster Maneuver, Small Fries, Best Tube, Heartbreaker Female performance and Longest Ride. Any worthy ride on a wave NOT occurring during a regular surfing contest is eligible.
The FREEWAVE CHALLENGE is the most inclusive competition in surfing history. There is no qualifying tour, no elimination rounds, and no one is ever asked to leave the water to make way for the special few. Any skilled surfer - from local legend to World Tour pro - could be the one to ride the wave of the summer. Other than following the basic rules of surfing wave possession etiquette and capturing the ride on video, the only other requirement is to simply show up and blow minds.
Video clips of contender rides will be uploaded to the FreewaveChallenge.com video hub by registered videographers where they may be viewed and rated by surfing fans worldwide. After the conclusion of the three month event window, the most popular and highest-rated clips will be selected as finalists, and the judging phase will take place.
Judging of the FREEWAVE CHALLENGE is meant to be highly subjective and will be decided by the most credible panel possible - the top surfers themselves, the videographers who capture the action daily, plus many of the most respected surfing journalists from around the world. By bringing together a voting bloc of the most influential figures in wave-riding worldwide, a new definition of what truly constitutes "the best surfing" will emerge.
The final rankings will be announced in mid-October 2008 and cash prizes will be awarded to the top surfers and to the videographers who documented the ultimate rides. The next FREEWAVE CHALLENGE will be in Hawaii starting October 1, 2008.
The Video Hub portion of the website for uploading and viewing clips will go live as soon as the event period begins on June 20, 2008. Good luck to all and may the best ride win!
